Resumé 

Artiklen undersøger technomusikkens rødder i Detroit og tager udgangspunkt i et længere interview med technopioneren Jeff Mills. Gennem samtalen reflekterer Mills over den kulturelle og sociale kontekst, som formede technomusikken i 1980’ernes Detroit – en by præget af industriel tilbagegang, arbejdsløshed og stærk segregation, men også af en dyb musikalsk tradition fra blandt andet Motown.

Artiklen beskriver, hvordan techno voksede frem i et miljø af lokale radiostationer, klubber og eksperimenterende musikere, inspireret af futurisme, teknologi og science fiction. Pionerer som Juan Atkins, Derrick May og Kevin Saunderson – kendt som Belleville Three – var med til at definere genrens tidlige lyd, mens Mills senere videreudviklede den gennem kollektivet Underground Resistance.

I interviewet fortæller Mills om DJ-kulturen i Detroit, om hvordan nye elektroniske instrumenter gjorde det muligt for unge musikere at eksperimentere, og om technoens futuristiske æstetik inspireret af blandt andet science fiction. Samtidig understreger han, at genren ikke blot handler om maskiner, men også om menneskelighed, kreativ frihed og muligheden for at forestille sig alternative fremtider.

The article explores the origins of techno music in Detroit through an in-depth interview with techno pioneer Jeff Mills. In the conversation, Mills reflects on the social and cultural conditions that shaped the Detroit techno scene in the 1980s—a period marked by industrial decline, unemployment, and strong racial divisions, but also by a powerful musical legacy rooted in institutions such as Motown.

The article traces how techno emerged from a vibrant local environment of radio shows, DJs, and experimental musicians influenced by futurism, technology, and science fiction. Early pioneers such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson—known as the Belleville Three—helped define the genre, while Mills later expanded its vision through the collective Underground Resistance.

In the interview, Mills discusses Detroit’s early DJ culture, the role of emerging electronic instruments, and the futuristic aesthetics that shaped techno. He also emphasizes that the genre is not only about machines and technology, but about human creativity, imagination, and the possibility of envisioning different futures through music.
