Resumé

Disco var aldrig bare glimmer, glamour og lørdagsdans. I denne artikel dykker jeg ned i discoens politiske og kulturelle rødder og viser, hvordan genren voksede frem af sorte, latinamerikanske og queer miljøer i 1970’ernes USA. Med udgangspunkt i blandt andet I Will Survive og I Feel Love beskrives disco som et frigørende rum, hvor køn, seksualitet og identitet kunne gentænkes på dansegulvet.

Artiklen ser også nærmere på, hvordan filmen Saturday Night Fever med John Travolta i hovedrollen var med til at kommercialisere og omforme discoens fortælling til et mere heteronormativt og hvidt mainstream-produkt. Centralt står Donna Summer, hvis futuristiske samarbejde med Giorgio Moroder ikke blot ændrede musikhistorien, men også kan læses gennem teorier om cyborgen og afrofuturisme.

Det er en fortælling om musik som modstand, om dansegulvet som politisk rum – og om hvorfor disco stadig lever videre i house og techno, længe efter at glitteret officielt faldt til jorden.

​

Disco was never just about glitter and Saturday night fever. In this article, I explore the political and cultural foundations of disco, tracing its roots to Black, Latin and queer communities in 1970s America. Through close readings of tracks such as I Will Survive and I Feel Love, disco emerges as a radical and liberating space where gender, sexuality and identity could be reimagined on the dancefloor.

The article also examines how Saturday Night Fever, starring John Travolta, commercialised and reshaped disco into a more heteronormative and white mainstream phenomenon. At the centre stands Donna Summer, whose groundbreaking collaboration with Giorgio Moroder not only transformed music history, but can also be understood through the lens of cyborg theory and Afrofuturism.

This is a story about music as resistance, about the dancefloor as a political space – and about why disco’s spirit continues to pulse through house and techno long after the so-called “death of disco.”
