Resumé
 

I artiklen taler jeg med Esben Weile Kjær om hans praksis, hvor monumentale installationer, lys og glas smelter sammen med popkulturelle og kosmiske referencer. Hans værker tager ofte udgangspunkt i naturfænomener som sol, regnbue og universet, men de bliver ikke gengivet naturalistisk – i stedet forskydes de gennem en visuel kultur, hvor billeder allerede er ladet med betydning.
 

Jeg er optaget af, hvordan han arbejder med spændingen mellem det monumentale og det poppede, hvor genkendelige motiver hele tiden får en drejning. I værker som Sun!, Rainbow Tornado og New Galaxy opstår der en dobbelthed mellem det forførende og det forstyrrende, hvor noget smukt samtidig rummer modstand eller ødelæggelse.
 

Et centralt tema er lys som aktivt materiale. For Esben Weile Kjær er lys ikke bare æstetik, men noget der styrer opmærksomhed – på samme måde som skærme, reklamer og religiøse billeder historisk har gjort. Han ser glas som et medie, der både kan skabe fascination og dirigere blikket, og som i dag er endnu mere relevant i en verden fyldt med visuel information.
 

I New Galaxy arbejder han med en svævende glas- og stålkonstruktion inspireret af Murano-lysekroner, hvor værket ændrer sig afhængigt af lys og beskuerens position. Samarbejdet med glasmestre bliver en del af processen, hvor materialet selv sætter betingelser.
 

Samlet set handler værket om en verden, hvor lys aldrig slukker, og hvor vi konstant er omgivet af visuelle stimuli – en tilstand, hvor opmærksomhed hele tiden er i spil.

In the article, I speak with Esben Weile Kjær about his artistic practice, where monumental installations, light, and glass merge with pop-cultural and cosmic references. His works often draw on natural phenomena such as the sun, rainbows, and the universe, but rather than depicting them naturalistically, he distorts and amplifies them through a visual culture already saturated with meaning.

I am interested in how he works with the tension between the monumental and the pop aesthetic, where familiar motifs are constantly shifted and reconfigured. In works such as Sun!, Rainbow Tornado, and New Galaxy, a duality emerges between attraction and disruption, where something visually seductive also contains resistance or destruction.

A central theme is light as an active material. For Esben Weile Kjær, light is not only an aesthetic tool but something that directs attention—much like screens, advertising, and religious imagery have historically done. He sees glass as a medium that produces fascination while also shaping perception, becoming especially relevant in a world saturated with visual information.

In New Galaxy, he works with a suspended glass and steel structure inspired by Murano chandeliers, where the work shifts depending on light conditions and the viewer’s position. Collaboration with glassmakers becomes part of the process, with the material itself setting certain conditions.

Overall, the work reflects a world in which light is constantly present and never turns off—a condition where attention is continuously negotiated in an environment of endless visual stimulation.
